Laghi di Fusine

Alpe del Lago

Two lakes, a spruce forest and the vertical walls of the Mangart group. The Fusine Lakes are one of the most extraordinary landscapes in the Julian Alps, and with MACA they also become a story: of geology, Alpine nature and a borderland with a great deal to say.

Some places do not need to be explained. The Fusine Lakes are one of them: two sheets of water set between the forest and the vertical walls of the Mangart group, with colours that change with the light and a quietness you can truly feel, especially if you choose the right moment to arrive.
The MACA route of Alpe del Lago leads visitors to discover the historic mountain pasture managed by the Vicinia di Fusine, where the same families have cared for this place and its history for generations. It is a walk of about four kilometres, suitable for everyone: families with children, first-time hikers and anyone simply looking for air and silence. The trail crosses the spruce forest surrounding the lakes, one of the best-preserved natural environments in the Julian Alps, and offers glimpses of the water and the peaks around it.
With MACA, the landscape gains a voice. The MACA points along the route tell the geology of this corner of Friuli, the flora and fauna of the forest, and the history of a territory that for centuries marked the boundary between different cultures and languages. A narrative that does not burden the walk, but enriches it.
The Fusine Lakes can be explored in every season: in summer they offer coolness and reflections on the water; in autumn the forest turns yellow and orange; in winter the route becomes a silent snowshoe walk through the snow. To experience the place in its most authentic version, weekdays or the low season are the best choice.
Download the MACA app and start the route from the first point you find at the car park of the second lake, which is shown on the map.
