Captain Hensel

A life-size bronze lion, a battle, an Austro-Hungarian officer who entered legend. The monument to Captain Friedrich Hensel is one of the most evocative places in Valcanale; with MACA, the story it preserves finally gains a voice.

There is a bronze lion, life-size and dying, lying in a corner of Valcanale. It is not just any monument: it is the sign of a precise story, that of Captain Friedrich Hensel and his men, who fought and died heroically in this territory in 1809.
Hensel was an Austro-Hungarian officer. His story, the courage he showed in battle and the end that delivered him to the collective memory of Valcanale are among those events rarely found in general history books, but known and handed down by those who live in these places. Fort Hensel, told in the other MACA route, bears his name. The bronze lion is his monument and that of his men.
With MACA, the monument dedicated to Captain Hensel becomes something more than a photo stop. The app tells the story of the officer, the context of the war in Valcanale and the meaning of this monument for the local community, restoring depth and meaning to a place that would otherwise be visited quickly and forgotten just as quickly.
The site can be reached by car and visited freely all year round.
